Advance your neonatal PICC insertion and ultrasound-guided vascular access skills with a progressive pathway to demonstrated competency and CNPI™ certification.
Whether you are beginning neonatal PICC education or advancing existing skills, connect foundational learning with ultrasound skills, deliberate practice, and supervised clinical experience.

Neonatal PICC Education
Begin with a neonatal-specific foundation
Start with the Neonatal PICC Certification & Insertion Bundle . This bundle includes 14 continuing education hours and provides an educational pathway toward CNPI™ — Certified Neonatal PICC Inserter certification.
Develop knowledge of patient and vessel assessment, catheter selection, catheter-to-vessel ratio, insertion technique, tip positioning, complication prevention, and care and maintenance.
The bundle also incorporates ultrasound education applicable to PICC insertion:
Understanding the Basics of Ultrasound
Ultrasound-Guided PICC Tips & Tricks
Step-by-Step Ultrasound-Guided PICC Insertion
Inserting PICCs with Ultrasound
Preparation for Ultrasound-Guided Insertion and Key Indicators of Successful Needle Advancement
Develop coordination and consistent needle-tip control
Ultrasound-guided insertion requires more than identifying a vessel. Build the psychomotor coordination needed to manipulate the probe while advancing the needle and maintaining continuous visualization and control of the needle tip.
For skills development beyond the basic ultrasound education in the neonatal bundle, explore the All-In-One UGPIV Mastery Certificate Training . The pathway provides structured development and assessment of:
Vessel assessment and probe manipulation
Needle guidance and needle-tip visualization
Deliberate simulation practice and supervised patient insertions
Competency assessment and a final Ultrasound Mastery Examination
Successful completion of the entire Mastery process results in the award of the Ultrasound Mastery Certificate , documenting completion of the required education, hands-on skills development, supervised clinical performance, competency assessments, and examination.
This structured process supports documentation and verification of demonstrated performance competency in ultrasound-guided vascular access.
Connect simulation with supervised neonatal practice
After completing the educational foundation, progress to hands-on practice followed by supervised neonatal PICC insertions with an experienced neonatal PICC inserter or preceptor. An experienced neonatal PICC inserter at your facility may be able to serve as your preceptor.
Your facility determines your competency to perform neonatal PICC insertions independently according to its policies, scope of practice, and competency requirements. The number of supervised insertions needed may vary with your experience and demonstrated performance.
Explore clinical shadowing in Atlanta
The 3-Day Pediatric & Neonatal Vascular Access Shadowing Program at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta – Arthur M. Blank Hospital combines online education, hands-on simulation, and clinical shadowing with an experienced pediatric/neonatal vascular access team.
Clinical observation and simulation: This shadowing program does not provide supervised patient PICC insertions. Arrange the supervised clinical insertion component with an experienced neonatal PICC inserter or preceptor.
Once you have completed the required neonatal PICC education, documented your qualification and competency, and developed the required neonatal PICC insertion experience, progress toward CNPI™ professional certification .
The pathway brings together neonatal PICC education, clinical qualification, insertion experience, competency documentation, and successful completion of the CNPI™ Certification Examination .
You may already have some of the education or clinical experience you need. We would be delighted to help you build on that experience and work toward your Ultrasound Mastery Certificate and CNPI™ certification.
Tell us about your current neonatal PICC experience, whether you are already performing neonatal PICC insertions, your ultrasound experience, and your access to an experienced neonatal PICC preceptor. We can help you determine where to begin without unnecessarily repeating training.
