The Pediatric Insertion Training class is designed to train the nurse or physician for the insertion of pediatric PICCs.

Pediatric PICC Qualification Training

About the Education Component of the Training:
Mastery of PICC insertions takes some time, especially with children and infants. The Pediatric/Neonatal Insertion Training class is designed to train the nurse or physician for the insertion of pediatric PICCs. The examples and actual practice issues discussed by the instructor give the clinician a better understanding of PICC procedures in an effort to increase success rates. Overall, this is a clinically based class allowing clinicians to become qualified to begin inserting Pediatric PICCs, under supervision.
While general for all pediatric patients, specific class information includes:
  • Growth and development
  • Venous anatomy
  • Site selection
  • Use of pre-medications
  • Insertion techniques
  • Complications with intervention
  • Tips and tricks for the use of child life to provide distraction therapy that reduces movement

The program includes an actual insertion of a neonate and an infant.

About the Additional Component of the Pediatric PICC Training:
There is no specific required number of supervised insertions; we recommend a minimum of five. Perform as many supervised insertions as necessary until the inserter and the supervisor feel comfortable with the inserter`s abilities.

The program consists of 4 sections and a 50 question post test. Practicum competencies are included. You will need a preceptor or supervisor to check off your competency. The program includes a manual which can be downloaded for future reference. Successful completion of the post-test with a score of 80% or higher is necessary to receive continuing education credits for this program.

    The Steps:
    1. successfully complete this course and the course post test
    2. print your continuing education certificate to use as proof of successful completion of a Pediatric PICC Training program.
    3. Begin your supervised, simulated insertion
    4. followed by supervised insertions on patients to the point of competency, comfort and confidence.
