The use of ultrasound is the standard for physicians and clinicians inserting vascular access devices. Ultrasound allows clinicians to increase success rates and avoid complications associated with blind sticks. Adding ultrasound guidance to an existing PICC program increases the rate of successful insertions to an average of greater than 90%. If you are currently placing PICCs without the use of ultrasound, we highly recommend you make the switch to ultrasound. This program is the perfect place to start. This short program is for the beginning ultrasound user. Note: This program does NOT teach vein access.
- What it is
- How it works
- How to hold the probe
- How to make adjustments to control what is seen on the screen
- Various probe movements and when to use them
This is an excellent place for the beginning ultrasound user to start as it allows for understanding of the ultrasound unit and its parts. It teaches how manipulation of the ultrasound probe and the various controls on the ultrasound unit affects what is seen on the viewing screen. Master this knowledge and these techniques first; (then learn how to access a vein using ultrasound guidance by taking our Step by Step Ultrasound Guided PICC Insertion Training program.) This program includes a manual which can be downloaded for future reference. Successful completion of the post-test with a score of 80% or higher is necessary to receive continuing education credits for this program.
