About This Class

Build Your Foundation for PICC Insertion

Take the next step in your vascular access education with Basic PICC Qualification Training. This course provides foundational knowledge for clinicians preparing to begin PICC insertion under supervision, connecting patient assessment and vein selection with procedural preparation, insertion concepts, and ongoing catheter care.

Develop an understanding of both the procedure and the clinical considerations behind it. From indications and infection prevention to complication recognition and documentation, the course supports your preparation for supervised simulation and clinical learning.

What You Will Learn

  • PICC and midline fundamentals: Review device definitions, indications, and contraindications.
  • Anatomy and vein selection: Identify relevant veins of the upper arm and chest and explore selection considerations based on vessel health.
  • Ultrasound assessment: Receive an introduction to ultrasound scanning as part of vascular access assessment.
  • Insertion procedure: Study a detailed, step-by-step overview of PICC insertion, including infection prevention practices.
  • Complication recognition: Review common PICC complications, prevention considerations, and responses when a complication is suspected.
  • Care and maintenance: Explore daily site assessment and catheter flushing concepts that support ongoing PICC function.
  • Professional responsibilities: Examine legal considerations associated with PICC-related intravenous therapy.

A Structured Starting Point for Supervised Practice

PICC training is a process that combines education, simulation, supervised clinical experience, and competency assessment. This course provides the educational foundation for that process.

  1. Complete the education: Work through the course and successfully complete the 50-question post-test.
  2. Document your learning: Print your continuing education certificate as evidence of successful course completion.
  3. Apply your knowledge in simulation: Arrange supervised simulated insertion practice at your facility or an appropriate training facility.
  4. Progress through supervised clinical practice: Continue learning with a qualified supervisor who can assess your performance and document competency according to your organization’s requirements.

Resources to Support Learning and Assessment

The course includes competency forms and a Global Rating Scale to support structured observation, feedback, and documentation by your supervisor. These resources help connect the educational content with your supervised training process.

Course completion documents your education; clinical competency is established through supervised assessment. Simulation and supervised patient insertions are additional training components arranged through your facility or a training provider.

Continue Your PICC Learning Pathway

Basic PICC Qualification Training is a prerequisite course in the PICC Certification program. As you develop your experience, continue building knowledge in ultrasound guidance, device assessment, complication management, and care and maintenance.

Clinicians interested in the Certified PICC Ultrasound Inserter (CPUI) credential can explore the separate certification pathway and its application, experience, verification, and examination requirements.

Who Should Attend

  • Clinicians preparing to begin PICC insertion under supervision
  • Nurses developing their vascular access knowledge
  • New members of PICC and vascular access teams
  • Educators and preceptors planning foundational PICC education
  • Clinicians beginning the educational pathway toward CPUI certification
