PICC Certification™ Program
PICC Excellence™ is proud to announce our PICC Certification™ Program. This program is intended to provide the vascular access clinician validation of a higher level of knowledge and practice in the field of PICC placement. PICC Certification™ is intended to be recognized throughout the healthcare community. It is a process by which an association grants recognition to an individual who has met predetermined standards specified by that association or agency. PICC Certification™ does NOT verify competency. Rather, PICC Excellence™ is certifying that the applicant has met specific standards of knowledge and training specific to PICCs as a credentialing process.
Requirements to Receive PICC Certification
- Basic PICC insertion training certificate including Modified Seldinger Technique with ultrasound
- Documented proof of at least 25 successful unsupervised PICC insertions (this can be documented by the signature of a supervisor verifying your performance)
- Copy of current professional license
- Copy of current driver's license
- Performance of a supervised insertion to confirm competency in adhering to industry guidelines
- Successful completion of the PICC Certification™ exam (Exam is taken online and requires witness signature)
How it Works
When you register for the PICC Certification™ program, you will receive a packet of information from PICC Excellence™. This packet includes:
- Application for PICC Certification™-this form requests personal information (name, address, phone, professional license number, employer info, email) and requires you to submit a copy of your driver's license and your professional license.
- Verification of PICC Experience -this form requires you to list your PICC training, PICC experience, and courses and conferences applicant has attended and received CE credit. This form requires a signature by your employer or supervisor attesting to the validity of the information and must be notarized to validate registrant's identity.
- Supervised Insertion Competency Checklist-this form requires the applicant to perform a supervised insertion allowing the preceptor to assess specific step-by-step procedures to ensure applicant is following guidelines as established by the CDC. Both the preceptor and applicant must sign the form at completion of the assessment.
- Checklist of forms-this form lists all required forms for complete submission before application can be processed. It requires signature of the applicant attesting to the fact that all forms are valid, true, accurate, and are an honest representation of the information provided.
- PICC Certification™ Study Manual-this is the study manual applicant will want to review before taking the 200 question certification exam.
Applicant sends ALL completed forms back to PICC Excellence™ for processing. Once all forms have been processed and accepted, applicant's login ID will be activated. Once this ID has been activated, applicant will be granted access to the PICC Certification™ exam. Applicant will have 2 months from the date of activation to take the exam.
- Immediately Prior to Exam - Once applicant signs onto the exam on the PICC Excellence™ website, a pop-up screen will prompt a witness for information. The witness will need to provide name, contact number, and will be asked to attest to the following: 1. I have verified the driver's license of the person taking the test and ascertain that the person pictured on the driver's license is the person taking the exam. 2. I attest that no study materials are available or being used during testing.
Once the witness has completed the witness form, testing will begin.
- Taking the test-The applicant will have 2 hours to complete the 200 question exam and cannot exit the exam once the exam has begun. All questions are multiple-choice or true false. Applicant must answer 160 (80%) of the questions correctly to pass the exam. Upon successful completion of the exam, applicant will print a certificate showing successful completion of exam and 3 CE credit hours.
PICC Excellence™ will receive official confirmation of the successful completion of the exam and then issue a formal CPUI™ Certificate. The PICC Certification™ and CPUI™ designation is mailed directly to the applicant. PICC Certification™ and use of CPUI™is effective for two years from the date of issue and must be renewed every two years.
