Managing Catheter Occlusions
While their popularity has grown exponentially, central venous catheters are not without complications. Catheter occlusions are the most common non-infectious complication with CVCs, and especially PICCs. It is estimated that more than 7 million central venous access devices are placed every year in the United States (Richardson, 2007). Despite technological advances, 25% of these will be associated with occlusions (Moureau, 2005). A catheter occlusion is defined as a partial or complete obstruction of a vascular access device preventing or limiting the infusion of solutions or medications. This course will complete your understanding of a variety of occlusions. It will provide valuable training on how to deal with these different occlusions.
To take this course, simply proceed through the manual one section at a time. Once you have completed this training manual, you will be required to take a post test to confirm your knowledge of management of catheter occlusions.. The post test consists of 15 multiple choice questions specific to catheter occlusions. You will be required to answer 80% (12) of these questions correctly before you will receive your certificate in Management of Catheter Occlusions. After completing the test, simply mail the evaluation form and your test answer sheet to the address provided. Your certificate will then be mailed to you.
