Catheter Exchange Training Program
A catheter can become damaged or unusable for various reasons. If this happens but the vein is still a good candidate for long-term venous access, the existing, non-functioning catheter can actually be replaced with a new catheter in the current vein. You want to exchange the catheter if the current vein is healthy and in good shape; there are no other useable veins, or the PICC documentation indicates a certain degree of difficulty in venous access for this patient. Catheter exchange is simply the process of reusing an already accessed vein by sliding the old catheter out about half way, cutting it, sliding a peel away introducer over the old catheter and into the vein, removing the old catheter and inserting a new one. While this procedure can provide a usable catheter, it is not without risk for the patient in terms of potential infection. This program illustrates a simulated exchange as well as a live exchange with actual video footage. It also includes an example of an over-the-wire exchange to illustrate the differences in technique as well as a review of the risks and benefits of the procedure. Not only is this information useful; it also gives you 2 hours of CE.
