Question:  I have been reading several articles trying to find out there is any official recommendation to switch from a ‘circular’ to a ‘back and forth’ technique (as recommended with Chloraprep™) for surgical preop scrubbing. The CVC guidelines seem to be quite old (1999). Do you know of anything?

Answer:  I am familiar with some key articles that established the foundation for change to back and forth scrub rather than circular technique (Crosby, 2001; Crosby, 2005; Hadaway, 2003; Richardson, 2006). I also know that when many authors delved back into the research there was nothing to support the circular, round and round, and clean to dirty since the skin is all considered dirty. Let me know if you have additional questions.
